15 MAY - 15 JUNE. 2021

Free Spirits Invitational Exhibition

This exhibition is inspired by Free Spirits, the philosophical foundation of Nietzsche. It consists of mural painting works of three Canadian muralists and NFT (Non-Fungible Token) paintings. Andre Kan, Chris Perez, Jieun June Kim are Asian Canadians who immigrated from different cultural backgrounds. They are working as Muralists representing street cultures and public arts.

Starting in the Old Stone Age, cave paintings, the origin of mural art, reflect human beings’ basic instincts to express and record and their shamanistic origin. Lubang Jeriji Saléh cave in Borneo (40,000-52,000 BP) is a representative work. In general, mural arts are painted on the walls of buildings using various methods and materials. They have taken the current style after changing forms for decades. In particular, city mural paintings are meaningful in that artists express their messages freely through arts in the public sphere and help regenerate cities.

Andre Kan is expressing the ever-changing space through his symbolic imagination based on his research on space structure and mutual connection. The dynamic structure of space reflects new connections and structures in the painter’s psychological space, with an optimistic future. In particular, the current work is researching constructive interpretation of evolving society, and suggesting the meaning of “possibility” through self-discovery. In short, Kan’s psychological structure describes changes and evolution of space and raises questions about the basic instincts of human beings and the surrounding world.

Chris Perez claims to stand for impulsive expressionism. He is expressing accidental, intentional, and aesthetic moments through spray paint methods based on research on self-talk. Through this process, he is providing experiences of talks among visitors and works.

Based on the love of nature and the city environment, and Korea’s folk arts, Jieun June Kim is transcending modern images through symbolic forms and the languages of Korea’s cultural heritage. In particular, the tiger series is reinterpreting various figures of the tiger—the object of Korea’s indigenous religion, which appears in Sansindo (mountain god paintings) in the Joseon Dynasty, and adds its unique humorous beauty.

In addition, the painters are participating as NFT (Non-Fungible Token) artists in the new art movement against the physical art market led by gatekeepers, by promoting and selling their works by themselves. Though the NFT art market is raising arguments and concerns for being exaggerated, it is noticeable that it helps grow the digital art market and has positive effects on the frozen art market in the Coronavirus era.

As such, the painters are providing even more visitors with opportunities to enjoy artworks through mural arts and NFT arts with no limitations on space. Furthermore, they help develop an open visiting culture and revitalize space for visitors’ participation and communication.

In line with Nietzsche’s Free Spirits, such a progressive and challenging spirit of art is giving artists whole independence to adopt new waves and practice new free will through direct experiences.
